Dutch trial finds fewer product changes but no reduction in leakage with smart continence care

Netherlands

Stage: Cluster-randomized clinical study

Academy Het Dorp reported on September 8, 2025 on a cluster-randomized trial involving 156 people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities at six care organizations. Smart continence care was compared with usual care.

Product changes decreased more in the intervention group, but the trial did not show a reduction in leakage. Changes also decreased in the control group. The findings distinguish an effect on changing frequency from an effect on leakage, and should not be generalized to all older people or care settings.
