The Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology described its Diapers Recycler project in an April 10, 2026 release. It proposes decentralized treatment at sites including hospitals, care facilities and childcare settings.
The research uses enzymes produced through fermentation of fruit and vegetable residues to clean used diaper material. acib reports laboratory recovery of absorbent polymer, plastics and an organic fraction that could follow further material or energy routes.
The release explicitly places the work at laboratory scale. It does not demonstrate a commercial installation in a care home, independent environmental superiority or regulatory approval of recovered material.
