PROTEUS describes Essity’s algae-material research

European Union Essity

PROTEUS reported on April 27, 2026, that project partner Essity had published a feature about its work on bio-based superabsorbents derived from sustainably harvested brown macroalgae. Essity is assessing raw materials from Laminaria hyperborea for potential use in baby diapers, feminine-care products and incontinence products.

The project presents the work as an example of connecting marine-biomass research with product development. Its wider aim is to reduce dependence on fossil-based materials and make better use of brown macroalgae. The update describes material assessment and development rather than a product launch.

Essity's feature appeared in several languages and was promoted across Europe and the Americas. PROTEUS is supported by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking, a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium that funds circular bio-based industries in Europe.
