Unicharm and Oji Nepia link used-diaper fuel recovery with toilet-paper production

Japan Oji NepiaUnicharm

Unicharm announced on October 1, 2024 that Oji Nepia had joined its RefF resource-recovery initiative. The companies linked electricity generated using solid recovered fuel, or RPF, from used diapers with the production of toilet rolls launched in Kyushu.

Unicharm describes collecting used diapers with Shibushi City and Osaki Town in Kagoshima, then separating materials into pulp, RPF and absorbent polymer. Oji Nepia uses electricity generated from the RPF for toilet-paper production. The announcement says a credit-based system manages the relationship between fuel quantities and product output.

The collaboration concerns energy recovery. The release does not say that pulp recovered from diapers becomes the fibre in these toilet rolls. Keeping those flows distinct helps readers interpret what the RefF mark on the packaging represents in this case.
