Kyushu University announced on September 10, 2025 that it and Tokyu Construction had started a joint experiment using used diapers as material for cultivating Trichoderma fungi. The work explores possible greening materials and builds on research into sludge from diaper-processing operations.
The partners plan to examine decomposition of organic components and possible plant-related applications. The announcement describes expected effects and research aims, rather than demonstrated commercial treatment outcomes.
Adult-only feedstock is not specified. The experiment should therefore be read as related research on used-diaper materials, not proof that an entire adult diaper, including its SAP and plastic film, can be biodegraded or used as an approved fertiliser.
