Duke-linked smart-toilet study follows six adults over several months

United States

A Duke-linked paper first published online on November 1, 2024 examines long-term automated stool monitoring using a smart toilet. It appears in the journal’s January 2025 issue.

The workplace-bathroom study involved six healthy volunteers aged 24–59. It recorded images from 474 bowel movements over a mean period of ten months and examined automated stool-form assessment.

This is a small feasibility study, not a care-home trial or evidence of disease prevention. Its healthy sample and uncommon abnormal stool forms limit generalization. The article discloses commercial interests connected with Coprata. Its plumbing-based imaging system is distinct from a diaper moisture sensor and from the TrueLoo study linked elsewhere.
