Small study examines a barrier cream for women using absorbent products

Italy

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology on August 5, 2026, assessed a cream containing zinc oxide, zinc gluconate, taurine and panthenol in 22 women with urinary incontinence who used absorbent products. Eleven were aged 65 or younger with incontinence following surgery or trauma, and eleven were older than 65. None had incontinence-associated dermatitis at enrolment.

Participants applied the cream to clean, dry skin in the diaper area at changes or as needed for 28 days and recorded discomfort daily. A dermatologist examined them at the beginning and end. The researchers reported no product-related adverse events or clinical signs of intolerance. Most participants rated the cream positively for moisturising, soothing and comfort.

The authors describe a small, single-centre study without a control group and call for controlled research to establish whether the cream prevents dermatitis. Menarini Group funded the study. At initial manuscript submission, three authors worked for Menarini Group and one for Eurofins Cosmetic & Personal Care Italy.
