Stage: Post-market cluster-randomized trial
An August 2025 Age and Ageing paper reports a six-week trial of the TENA SmartCare Change Indicator in nursing homes in Canada and Germany. The trial did not demonstrate its co-primary outcomes of care efficiency and skin-health change.
Some secondary measures, including sleep quality, favoured the device. One device-related harm was reported. These findings require outcome-by-outcome interpretation rather than a general claim of effectiveness. Essity funded and co-designed the trial, and company employees are among the authors.
