Greater Shepparton announces temporary landfill disposal while nappy collection continues

Australia

Greater Shepparton City Council announced on July 10, 2025 that diapers collected through its nappy and incontinence-aid service would temporarily go to landfill because its processor was reducing operations while enhancing processing capabilities. Weekly household collection was to continue.

The council reported that more than 160 tonnes had been processed during the 2024–25 financial year. That figure covers the combined nappy and incontinence-aid service and is not an adult-diaper-only total. The demonstration process separated plastics for use in park furniture and converted fibres into cat litter, according to the council.

This article records the July 2025 change. The announcement gave no confirmed restart timetable, and it does not establish whether processing has resumed by October 2026. The distinction between continued separate collection and the destination of collected material is central to understanding the notice.
